Film Festival Millennium Docs Against Gravity initiated the trend of documentary films in Poland and has since generated broad interest among audiences, a result of the consistently developed and attractive festival program. The growing audience, the festival's international stature, and the increasing number of partners reflect the validity of the festival's development concept and the creation of a community of audiences and co-organizing organizations for one of the most important film events in Poland. The 22nd edition of the festival in 2025 gathered an audience of over 180,000 people. As the only film festival in Europe, it takes place simultaneously in 7 cities: Warsaw, Wrocław, Gdynia, Poznań, Katowice, Bydgoszcz, and Łódź. Our festival is evolving in a nomadic manner, in line with the 21st century, seeking audiences all over the country. We believe this is the future of film festivals. We take the priorities of promoting film culture by our partnering institutions who financially support the festival very seriously. Our festival was the first in Poland to introduce a competition for the Best Feature-Length Documentary (the Bank Millennium Award). In 2024, MDAG was officially recognized as an Oscar®-qualifying festival in the category of Best Feature Documentary. In 2022, Millennium Docs Against Gravity was also admitted by the European Film Academy to the group of “major European film festivals,” gaining the right to recommend films for the European Film Awards. In 2023, the festival’s Artistic Director, Karol Piekarczyk, became a member of the European Film Academy. In 2021, the festival’s founder and director, Artur Liebhart, received the Polityka Passport Award—granted for the first time in a special “Remote Culture” category. In both 2009 and 2023, MDAG received the prestigious Polish Film Institute Award for the “most important international film event” in Poland and was nominated in the same category in 2013. In 2019, the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival was listed among the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine. MDAG is also a co-founder and member of the Doc Alliance, which brings together seven key European documentary film festivals: CPH: DOX Copenhagen, DOK Leipzig, IDFF Jihlava, FID Marseille, Visions du Réel Nyon, Doclisboa, and Millennium Docs Against Gravity. In May 2026, we will invite audiences on a cinematic journey around the world and into themselves. Eye Yoga: Conscious Seeing Workshop The Conscious Seeing workshop, co-organized with Łódź Fotofestiwal, combined practical visual training with theoretical sessions. Participants learned about the mechanisms of the human visual system to enhance perception awareness and creative sensitivity. The Voice of YOUNG MINDS – How Can We Support Their Potential? In a talk co-organized with the YOUNG MINDS project after the screening of Speak., we discussed how to support young people so they feel heard and have the courage to speak out. Film to Table (Warsaw) | A Tasting Dinner Inspired by Film A one-of-a-kind culinary and cinematic experience that allowed audiences to engage with cinema in a sensory way. After the screening of the Norwegian film Folktales, viewers headed to MUND restaurant at PURO Hotel for a tasting dinner inspired by the film. The flavors of Northern cuisine became the backdrop for further conversation and reflection. Stand-up for Palestine: Noam Shuster-Eliassi A charity stand-up performance by the protagonist of Coexistence, My Ass!, which opened this year’s festival. In this activist comedy act, humor became a tool for unpacking complex political issues and challenging dominant social narratives. Ticket sales totaling PLN 11,200 were donated to Clean Shelter, a foundation providing sanitation and shelter for displaced communities in Gaza. “Co to będzie” Live: How Does the Far Right Recruit? In a live recording of the Co to będzie podcast, Marta Nowak and Miłosz Wiatrowski-Bujacz examined how the far right uses the internet to attract very young people to its ideology. Warsaw's top DJs – Cougar DJ, NuCasa, and the energetic duo Holiday80 – got the crowd dancing. It was a true celebration of house music and good vibes! Stefan Wesołowski Concert On the second day of the festival, Polish violinist, producer, and composer Stefan Wesołowski took the stage. He created the original score for Kompleta, a film by Magdalena Hueckel and Tomasz Śliwiński that premiered at MDAG. He was joined by Anna Pašić on harp and Oliwier Andruszczenko on bass clarinet, delivering a delicate and organic acoustic performance. Live Music Screening: What Animals Do in the Shadows At Kino Iluzjon, audiences had a rare chance to experience What Animals Do in the Shadows, directed by Eliza Petkova, with a live improvised score. Three musicians – Anil Eraslan (cello), Jung Jae-Kim (saxophone), and Shingo Masuda (percussion and kanun) – performed a live soundtrack, creating a powerful fusion of image and sound. Women Play Ukraine The second festival weekend opened with a strong electronic pulse. In solidarity with Ukraine, we invited three Ukrainian artists – Facheroia, Anna Borsuk, and Richie Beige. Playing for a Warsaw audience, they showcased the unique charm of Ukraine’s underground and electronic music scene in all its diversity. Love Silent Disco Audiences at Kino Iluzjon got to immerse themselves in an extraordinary romantic Silent Disco experience. Equipped with headphones, festivalgoers danced to a selection of love-infused tunes in an intimate and playful atmosphere – a night of music, movement, and heartbeats. Pogodno – Babu Król – Chango Play Budyń At Komuna Warszawa, crowds of fans gathered to pay tribute to Jacek “Budyń” Szymkiewicz – a legend of the Polish music scene who passed away in 2022. This free concert brought together outstanding acts: Pogodno, Babu Król, Chango, and special guest Krzysztof Zalewski. This XR experience zone featured five exceptional works that explored the boundaries of perception, identity, and the human relationship with technology. The exhibition was curated by Anna Szylar and Karol Piekarczyk. The opening event on May 12 included a special meeting with the creators of the AI & Me installation, led by Daniela Nedovescu and moderated by Anna Szylar. The remarkable growth of the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival in recent years has been recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. MDAG has officially been added to the prestigious list of Oscar®-qualifying festivals in the category of Best Feature Documentary! This is a tremendous achievement for the entire team, as this exclusive list has remained virtually unchanged for decades and includes only the world’s most important and renowned film events—such as Berlinale or the Cannes Film Festival. Having grown into the second-largest documentary film festival in Europe, MDAG has become a key destination for global and international premieres, and a launchpad for films on their journey to the most prestigious awards—something experts emphasized in their letters of recommendation. MDAG is also a founding member of Doc Alliance, a federation of seven leading European documentary festivals, and a member of the European Film Academy. The ability to open the road to the Oscars® for the winning film is a crowning achievement of the festival’s 21-year history. Members of the Academy on MDAG In recent years, the Main Competition jury at Millennium Docs Against Gravity has featured numerous Oscar® winners and nominees. Among them is Paweł Pawlikowski, Polish Academy Award winner, who expressed his enthusiasm: “As a Polish filmmaker, I’m personally thrilled that my country is home to such a stylish, confident, highly regarded, and cool film event. I’m happy to welcome fellow members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to Warsaw every year.” The jury has also included American director David France, who praised the festival: “The film selection was world-class, the competition thrilling, and the juries—both for the Grand Prix – Bank Millennium Award and other categories—were first-rate, composed of leading voices in cinema from Europe and North America. Jako jedyny festiwal filmowy w Europie odbywa się naraz w 7 miastach: Warszawie, Wrocławiu, Gdyni, Poznaniu, Katowicach, Bydgoszczy oraz Łodzi. W maju 2026 roku zaprosimy widzów do filmowej podróży dookoła świata i w głąb siebie samych. 22. MDAG odbędzie się w dniach 8-17 maja w kinach, a następnie online w dniach 19 maja - 1 czerwca 2026 roku. Nasz festiwal rozwija się w sposób nomadyczny, na miarę XXI wieku, szukając widza w całym kraju. Uważamy, że to jest przyszłość festiwali filmowych. Podchodzimy niezmiernie poważnie do priorytetów upowszechniania kultury filmowej partnerskich instytucji dofinansowujących festiwal. Rosnąca publiczność, ranga festiwalu na arenie międzynarodowej oraz wzrastająca liczba partnerów świadczą o słuszności konceptu rozwoju festiwalu i tworzenia wspólnoty widzów oraz organizacji współorganizujących to jedno z najważniejszych wydarzeń filmowych w Polsce. Nasz festiwal był pierwszym w Polsce, który wprowadził konkurs na najlepszy pełnometrażowy film dokumentalny (Nagroda Banku Millennium). W 2024 roku MDAG znalazł się na liście festiwali kwalifikujących do Oscara® w kategorii Najlepszy Pełnometrażowy Film Dokumentalny. W 2022 roku Millennium Docs Against Gravity zostało z kolei przyjęte przez Europejską Akademię Filmową w poczet „najważniejszych europejskich festiwali filmowych”, zyskując możliwość kwalifikowanie filmów do Europejskiej Nagrody Filmowej. W 2023 roku członkiem Europejskiej Akademii Filmowej stał się dyrektor artystyczny festiwalu - Karol Piekarczyk. W 2021 roku założyciel i dyrektor festiwalu - Artur Liebhart został nagrodzony Paszportem „Polityki” - przyznanym po raz pierwszy w specjalnej kategorii "Kultura Zdalna". W 2009 i 2023 roku MDAG otrzymał prestiżową nagrodę Polskiego Instytutu Sztuki Filmowej za „najważniejsze międzynarodowe wydarzenie filmowe” w Polsce. Festiwal został nominowany w tej samej kategorii także w 2013 roku. W 2019 roku Festiwal Filmowy Millennium Docs Against Gravity znalazł się na liście 25 Najbardziej Cool Festiwali Filmowych na Świecie według „MovieMaker Magazine”. MDAG jest także współzałożycielem i członkiem sieci Doc Alliance, która skupia siedem kluczowych europejskich festiwali filmów dokumentalnych: CPH: DOX Copenhagen, DOK Leipzig, IDFF Jihlava, FID Marsylia, Visions du Réel Nyon, Doclisboa i właśnie Millennium Docs Against Gravity. MIĘDZY NAMI CAŁY ŚWIAT „Między nami cały świat” było hasłem MDAG w 2025 roku. Odwoływało się do poczucia wspólnoty - widzów_ek, twórczyń_ów i wszystkich osób tworzących drugie największe święto kina dokumentalnego w Europie. „W czasie 22. edycji Millennium Docs Against Gravity mówiliśmy dużo o wspólnocie. Ogromnie się cieszymy, że wezwanie twórców_czyń festiwalowych filmów do solidarności w niepewnych czasach i wspólnego czerpania siły z historii pokazanych na ekranie spotkało się z tak ciepłym przyjęciem publiczności. Rekordowy wynik to także zobowiązanie, które będziemy realizowali w kolejnych latach, sprowadzając do Polski najlepsze i starannie wyselekcjonowane artystyczne filmy dokumentalne” - mówi Mateusz Góra, szef komunikacji MDAG.
